Is the PartyGaming Poker Party Over? Pre-trade update 8/7/08
PartyGaming (PRTY) was down 5% in early trades after issuing a downbeat trading statement early this morning.
Whilst clean EBITDA is expected to be higher due to lower costs the worry continues to be the poker revenues which are falling. PRTY need to have a radical rethink in my opinion. They are simply losing the battle against the US big boys such as Pokerstars and coming under increasing pressure from the likes of PKR and even Ladbrokes (who are slowly using their financial muscle to leverage their strong brand).
I believe PRTY should snap up PKR now - it may already be too expensive for them. PKR is ground breaking and the future of Poker. It is a pity that PRTY may already have left it too late. Having now played on many sites as part of my extensive research there is no comparison.
Pre-close trading Update [ADVFN]
Since 28 April 2008 gross revenues have, as expected, fallen slightly due to seasonality and competition for players' leisure time from the Euro 2008 football tournament. Casino has continued to perform strongly but this was offset by a weaker than expected performance in poker and sports betting with overall revenues slightly lower than expected. However, operational efficiencies and lower marketing costs mean that Clean EBITDA margins in the first half are expected to be substantially higher than in the comparable period in 2007.
The strong performance in casino has been driven by an increase in the number of players and cross-selling from poker. Since their launch in May, two new branded slot machines, Mission:Impossible and Saturday Night Fever, have proved particularly popular and bingo is now starting to gain traction in the UK following the launch of Bingo Night Live on ITV1.
In poker, despite making the new loyalty scheme more generous to our VIPs, the cost of PartyPoints had been reduced to previous levels by the end of the second quarter, with the full benefit expected to be realised in the second half of the year. However, strong competition, particularly from poker sites that continue to accept US players, has led to an increase in bonuses and costs associated with some of our poker tournaments in the period.
In sports betting, Euro 2008 saw a marked increase in betting volume, but a poor run of results at the start of the tournament impacted the gross win margin.
The full year result will be impacted by a $4m one-off charge associated with the
replacement of the Chief Executive that has been incurred in the first half. However, a number of new initiatives in poker, the addition of further branded slot machines during the second half and continued progress on UK bingo lead the Board to remain confident about the Group's prospects for the full year.

"Global Gambler Report"
Economists and Psychologists at Nottingham Trent University wrote a report back in January 2007 that I am just rereading. For those that have not read it, the report makes very interesting reading. The results are fairly intuitive for those that play on line Poker and at casinos.
There are some great quotes in there.
I have also added this report to the gambling links section.
An Exploratory Investigation into the Attitudes and Behaviours of Internet Casino and Poker Players
The emergence of online gambling has been one of the most significant and controversial developments in the gaming and wagering fields over the past two decades. Though clearly economically substantial, little is factually known about this sector, its customers, and its social and economic impacts. Even more than with other forms of gambling, policy decisions regarding online gambling have been made based on presumptions or prejudices, rather than on facts and scientific findings.
../
Social scientists have long been advocating such research and I am delighted that the funding has finally been found to allow it to be developed in a proper manner. This report addresses this emerging global industry in all its richness and provides a benchmark from which further serious and competent research can and will emerge. It contributes a great deal to our understanding of online gambling and I urge everyone to read it with care.
This is the best bit - it is always clear that it goes on especially on PKR where I play most of my games. Those who change sex to play poker - you know who you are, then read on:
Around 12% of players pretended to be a different gender when playing online. Those who always swapped genders when playing poker reported having less profitable play than any other type of player. This finding is consistent with Parke, Wood, Griffiths, and Rigbye (2006) who found that gender swapping during poker play was the number one predictor of gambling problems when playing Internet poker. In this study the authors concluded that these players may have been less successful as a consequence of over estimating the advantage of playing poker as a different sex. More research is needed to determine whether this is something that players do with the intention of controlling the outcome of the game, or whether they do it in order to ”escape” everyday life and use an online profile to dissociate or ‘zone out’ from their real life persona.
The whole report throws up some interesting ideas. I am surprised for example of how many people still see Poker as a game of chance. Good grief. They should play for a while and realise that as a fish, they should stick to roulette.

PKR goes into hard copy
Netbetblog favourite PKR.com (see top banner) are launching a magazine to go with their 3D fun poker site.
A brave move. Print is always costly. Poker players are a fickle bunch and will play at the best site and will rarely be swayed by glossy pictures even if the 3D players they depict in the magazine are sure to be busty and wearing low cut dresses.
As a PKR player (find me under NetBet and say hello) I should receive this as a regular player.
Is this a good idea? I think it is. This is a way for PKR to appeal to their strengths and that is the visuals. Their banners stand out as you can see and this is what they need to market and sell. The magazine is a clever way of doing this. Good move.
UK's Dennis Publishing will produce new quarterly publication [Online Casinos]
The fast-growing 3D online poker firm PKR has hired Dennis Communications, the customer publishing arm of Dennis Publishing, to produce a quarterly print magazine for its players. The first issue of the magazine will be published in June 2008.
The PKR.com publication will be distributed free of charge to an international selection of PKR.com customers and will be targeted specifically at advanced poker players; the management team at PKR are keeping the title under wraps until launch.
Bespoke content will include advanced poker strategy and advice, poker news, PKR.com promotions and relevant player reviews.
A six-figure sum and year long contract was negotiated for the deal with Dennis Communications that will see PKR.com in print for the first time. PKR.com officials said the company has seen remarkable growth since launch and it was felt that now was the perfect time to go one step further in rewarding loyal customers and offering a new way to interact with the brand.
PKR.com marketing director, Simon Prodger said, “Teaming up with Dennis Communications on this project marries well into what our brand represents. PKR.com has been a great success in the digital world, and we are pleased to offer our online players more content with this new print magazine. This partnership is a good opportunity to enhance the relationship our brand has already formed with our loyal players and to build on the success of our online output.”
Tim Farthing, Commercial Director at Dennis Communications commented, “Dennis Publishing have already established themselves as the world’s leading gambling publisher, owning numerous titles such as Inside Poker and Poker Player. This perfectly places Dennis Communications to bring PKR.com into the print spectrum as we have a long and successful working relationship with them. “

888's interim statement 7/05/08: revenue growth of 38%
888.com issues a management statement earlier today. Revenue growth was healthy at 38% driven by 888ladies the Bingo offering as 888 attempt to diversify away from their core offerings.
888 is an interesting company with a great and well known brand. They also have a large war chest of over $100million to make acquisitions.
If I were advising the management I would suggest spending this sooner rather than later and could suggest a couple of excellent targets for around that price.
Here are the highlights:
Management Statement [ADVFN]

* Net Gaming Revenue ("NGR") up 38% to US$64 million (Q1 2007: US$47 million)

There are a number of interesting observations for sector watchers who I imagine regular readers of netbetblog must be.
This is the issue of declining or slowing Poker revenues. This is an issue we need to get to the bottom of. Is it just 888.com? No it isn't. PRTY have seen similar numbers.
True PKR are doing well (the favorite of this blog - search for Netbet on PKR and lets have a game of poker). Equally, Pokerstars and TitanPoker are using their US honed marketing intelligence to clean up (but they are also seeing slowing revenue growth).
Is the boom over? Have all the fish been cleaned out leaving only sharks to feed on each other?
I am still optimistic - internet penetration can only grow and poker is the best game in town.
I have set up a new PKR campaign for beginners. Remember it costs nothing to join and practice tables are completely free. If you do play for cash search for me as "netbet" and say hello when you find me. I am a big fish learning the game so I am sure you will have fun taking my money.
The lowest bonus on offer which is perfect for beginners is the $50 fixed. Trust me - this is all you need.

PKR launches new 3D CASINO
PKR already offer one of the best online poker sites for fun players and pros alike. Find the fish by playing Netbet at PKR.
Here is the link to the Casino (also see the top banner). Again, you can play for free to test it out. A much more fun option to lose money :-)
PKR unashamedly market themselves at young men and women brought up as gamers. The women also always seem to pick low cut dresses. What I always wonder is how many of them are really men.

Party Gaming rumours 19th March 2008
In the middle of the current financial crisis Party Gaming shares broke their realtively narrow trading range to head sharply downward are are already down over 10% down today alone.
The word on street, meaning entirely unsubstantiated rumours of no substance whatsoever, include:
1. A massive overhang of stock of around 80m shares
2. A possible rights issue
3. PartyPoker website down.
Whatever the cause, and it could be a result of some large short bets being taken ahead of US news on the size of any fine, these are difficult times for PRTY shareholders.
However, the fundamentals are reasonably sound so one would expect PRTY to bounce soon enough. Competitive pressures will not go away however and the site is losing players to Pokerstars and even UK competitors such as PKR that offer a much more entertaining product.
.
Poker Strategy
As part of my research into the investment potential of online gaming companies it is an ugly part of the job but I also have to sample the merchandise. This means of course playing poker in all the dingy poker rooms, testing the affiliate sites and checking customer service (cash in, cash out, bonus clearing etc).
Inevitably this could prove to be a costly exercise. For example, you can find me on PKR (see below) as "netbet" or on PokerWise and PokerKings (GVC) as "Sharecrash".
Now, to undertake a full review means I have to at least be able to play poker. The solution, as all good academics and investors know, is to do the research. Having devoured a couple of books and read many websites I also happened across PokerStrategy.com.
I have many links under the "Poker links" and "Poker Blogs" below but Pokerstrategy.com stands out and was given a thorough road testing (although I have not yet registered to get the more advanced stuff and videos although they look interesting). There are also a series of scary looking downloads that I am sure would help. Being mathematically trained I find it simple enough to memorise most of it (he says confidently).
What is great are the strategy sheets and the well populated free forums. It is fascinating to read about all the students and general misfits who are attempting to make a living as poker pros after playing for 2 months. There is some deliciously voyeuristic about reading about the ups and then inevitable downs as their poker fueled life disintegrates around their ears. The blog series also makes for entertaining reading. Must be such a dull job playing 12 hours a day at 8 tables a time to make a few dollars.
I can genuinely say that I learnt something from this site, perhaps enough to keep me playing for a few more months. These poker rooms have to be tested and remember I am doing it for research purposes to pass on the information in this blog.
It does all seem to be free to the extent that they appear to pay you to register. All economists like to get something for free and the catch is not clear. The idea appears to be that they train you and give you up to $150 (although they will be given a commission from the site you sign up to). A decent business model. It would be interesting to know how much profit they make from this. Read about the business model HERE.
PokerStrategy is the world’s biggest poker school! We offer you an entire poker education for free. You will get $50 starting capital plus $100 bonus to start your poker career. That means you do not have to deposit your own money. Our offer is absolutely free and without any obligation. You are not agreeing to any sort of financial or legal duties, neither a bank account nor a credit card is needed!
Here again is the PKR weekly promotion and thanks to those who have already signed up. Remember any payments go into further research. Given more money can be made from one good investment than hours and hours of poker play.

888 trading statement 12/2/2008: revenues up 35% and trading well
888.com shares have had a rather volatile last month or so with the shares falling from over £1.40 down to £1.15 and back to £1.40.
In the meantime that have reentered the FTSE 250, launched "888ladies" online BINGO and released new KPIs.
Here are the highlights:
Highlights*:
* Net Gaming Revenue for the 12 months ended 31 December 2007 - Up 36% at
US$213 million (2006: US$157 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Casino for the 12 months ended 31 December 2007 -
Up 33% to US$118 million (2006: US$89 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Poker for the 12 months ended 31 December 2007 -
Up 18% to US$81 million (2006: US$68 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue in Q4 2007 from Casino up 60% to US$35 million (Q4 2006:
US$22 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue in Q4 2007 from Poker up 17% to US$21 million (Q4 2006:
US$18 million)
* Strong Q4 2007 trading with 22% Casino NGR growth and 15% Poker NGR growth
above Q3 2007
* 30% increase in real money registered accounts to 4.7 million as at 31
December 2007 from 31 December 2006
* "888ladies", a new Bingo offering launched and already showing hundreds of
new customers recruited daily
* Launch of the World Poker Crown - the largest** online guaranteed prize
poker tournament of its kind with $3 million guaranteed prizes
* 888 returned to the FTSE250 index
With over 4.7 million cash accounts 888.com are one of the big boys of online gaming. I believe they still need to grow through aquistion and organically to be a true survivor but they do appear to have an effective marketing machine operating at full speed. 209,000 active customers is impressive but needs to be compared with other gaming companies - an 11% increase on 2006 is not great given the growth of the sector.
888.com's KPIs are as follows. Investors should look to compare 888 KPIs with other companies when they are released. I include them here for future analysis.
Key Performance Indicators*
Fourth quarter 2007
* Group Net Gaming Revenue up 55% to US$63 million (Q4 2006: US$40 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Casino and Poker up 40% to US$57 million (Q4 2006:
US$40 million)

million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Poker up 17% to US$21 million (Q4 2006: US$18
million)
* Number of active customers in Casino and Poker reached 209,918, an increase
of 11% compared to 2006
* Quarterly Net Gaming Revenue per active group member in Casino and Poker
was US$270, an increase of 26% compared to 2006
* Continued growth from Emerging Offering*** with Net Gaming Revenue at
US$6.2 million (Q4 2006: Nil)
* As at 31 December 2007, 888 had 4.7 million real money registered
customer accounts, representing an increase of 30% since 31 December 2006
12 months ended 31 December 2007
* Net Gaming Revenue up 36% to US$213 million (12 months to 31 December 2006:
US$157 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Casino and Poker up 27% to US$199 million (12
months to 31 December 2006: US$157 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Casino up 33% to US$118 million (12 months to 31
December 2006: US$89 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Poker up 18% to US$81 million (12 months to 31
December 2006: US$68 million)
* Net Gaming Revenue from Emerging Offering was US$14 million (12 months to

Given our support for 3D poker it is also interesting to note:
New Poker version 4.5 (2D and 3D) launched with an option for users to choose a classic "race track" 2D view, or 3D view with or without Avatars.
It will be interesting to see how much of a take up the 3D offering gets. PKR will take some beating for free fun.
"PKR Poker" in action on YouTube
One of Netbetblog's favourite poker sites remains PKR poker. For a Friday entertainment post check out the Youtube video below.
This YouTube video makes for interesting viewing for anyone not familiar with PKR. It takes you pretty much through the whole set up, and plays a hand, and creates an Avtar. Pity the narrator has such poor English. Must be Scandinavian is my guess.
For anyone who only plays 2D it is worth watching this video.
Click the banner below to get access to the free download. As PKR is aimed as casual gamers there are plenty of free tables so no cash need be lost in trying it out.

Pokerwize (PLW) product launch - share price up 130%
In a remarkable day for microcap Pokerwise (PLW) their share price rocketed up 130% (at time of writing) on news that Ladbrokes has launched its 3D product.
Given we know nothing of revenues (although it is an upfront fee and revenue sharing deal) such enthusiasm is frankly astonishing. LAD is only a small player in the competitive online poker market and while this will help differentiate their product offering it is unlikelty to mean a step change in the fortunes of either PLW or LAD.
What PLW need is additional sales to other microgaming poker rooms given that their stand alone offering brings in such small revenues and no where enough sufficient to cover costs.
It will be interesting to see where the share price is in two weeks time. If it is higher that todays's peak I will be mightly surprised.

Opinions welcome.

BARCELONA attracts the gaming industry's best
The sixth annual European i-Gaming Congress and Expo is currently being held in Barcelona, Spain.
The great and the good are all there.
The following article from online-casinos.com provides an excellent overview of the events so far.
ONLINE GAMBLING INDUSTRY GATHERS IN BARCELONA
Numerous quoted companies are mentioned. Here are a few.
The first quote I have pulled out relates to the our recommended Poker room "PKR". Clicking the link below will demonstrate why we believe 3D poker via PKR is the fun future of poker. The link also provides rakeback as part of the Netbetblog promotion.
San [Jez San] revealed that the advent of the UIGEA dissuaded his company from offering services to US players when it launched. The 3D and content rich nature of the poker offering had ensured that it was encountering very little competition and growth had been spectacular, with the company breaking even in the first year.
and later:
San echoed Gigi Levy's comments on the importance of community, which he feels strengthens the product, adding that forums, avatars and more realistic and immersive 3D poker games were the way forward.
I tend to agree - to not try 3D poker is foolish in my opinion.
Other companies that get a mention include:
Neteller:
Martin made the understatement of the morning when he said that the past year had been unexpectedly unchallenging for Neteller and not much fun. The brand had been damaged and repair work was in progress he revealed.
Because of the unique and dangerous circumstances in which the company found itself in the issue with the US Department of Justice, it had been constrained in what it could do and say, and this had had an adverse effect on how it was perceived. However, the payouts to American players was largely completed, the negotiations completed and the company was moving forward with optimism and sound fundamental strengths.
later on Asian markets:
There seemed to be general agreement that the Asian market presented unique problems, evidenced by the many less than successful attempts to penetrate it over the past three years. Martin remained optimistic of Neteller's efforts, although he commented that financial systems were still immature, and similar shortcomings were present in South America.
888 Holdings
The keynote address was by 888 Holdings CEO Gigi Levy who opined that the phenomenal annual double digit growth of the industry and rapid technology developments meant that operators have hitherto been focused on the present instead of paying more attention to evolving trends that had been largely overlooked.
The Internet gambling industry had rightly been identified as the most successful of the online businesses to come out of the Internet, with good levels of expertise developed in marketing and technology, but there had been missed opportunities to capitalise early on trends that could have added even more impetus to development and business success.
Sportingbet
A confident McIver [CEO Sportingbet] addressed the question of whether the industry could have had more impact in a lobbying sense if it had acted with more cohesion, pointing out that sometimes going it alone was more productive than management by committee initiatives. He emphasised the importance of fighting corruption in sport, and was upbeat on the results of the recent UK Gambling Commission study on Gambling Prevalence which showed that despite the huge growth in online gambling, problem gambling levels remained largely unchanged, contradicting the opinions often put forward by industry opponents that online gambling was a major cause for concern. He succinctly pointed out that in fact a principal area of concern on problem gambling had turned out to be the government's national lottery!
He nevertheless added that the results of the study should provide a powerful incentive for the industry to maintain its high level of achievement in keeping problem gambling under control going forward.
Finally, there is considerable comment on US regulatory system that is worth reading.
